HHH Volunteer Opportunities

Healthcare for the Homeless-Houston welcomes volunteers to our team of medical, mental health, dental and social service professionals who work together to fulfill our mission of promoting health, hope and dignity for Houston’s homeless through accessible and comprehensive care.

General Qualifications for Volunteers
  • At least 18 years of age
  • Interest in healthcare and working with homeless individuals
  • Willingness to learn while participating in a team effort
  • Compassionate, congenial, patient, calm nature
  • Ability to communicate clearly

Clinic Intake Assistant

  • Conducts initial clinic interview with clients getting basic information, including reasons for clinic visit; also may assist with Social Intake Form for first-time clients
  • Takes vital signs and information—pulse, blood pressure, temperature, respiration rate, weight, height
  • Works in close coordination with clinicians on various tasks as needed and as liaison between clients and clinicians to help maintain smooth clinic flow
  • When appropriate, may observe examinations and treatment of patients and participate in clinical discussions
  • Training provided individually at beginning of service
  • Availability for a minimum of 1 shift per week (3 to 4 hours) for at least 4 months, or a semester

Clinic Host

  • Staffs the clinic waiting area in a welcoming, congenial, organized and disciplined manner
  • Assists in communication with other service areas of host agency to call clients to the clinic
  • Greets clients and helps them feel welcome and comfortable as they arrive in the clinic
  • Assists clients with their questions and with information about the clinic during their wait for intake and examination
  • Communicates with clinic staff to facilitate beginning and continuation of client flow through the clinic
  • Assists staff with miscellaneous tasks as needed
  • Availability for a minimum of 1 shift per week (3 to 4 hours) for at least 4 months, or a semester

Direct Care Provider

  • Primary Care --Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants A minimum of 1 regularly scheduled shift per month is requested.
  • Medical Subspecialties Times can be set by special arrangement or for a regular shift.
  • Dental—Dentists, Dental Hygienists, Dental Assistants. Also needed, Clerical and Computer Software Support. Times can be set by special arrangement or for a regular shift.

YOU can do something meaningful to help the homeless. YOU can help make change possible as a volunteer with the Healthcare for the Homeless-Houston team. YOU can help homeless men, women and children attain a foundation of health for rebuilding self-sufficient lives. YOUR PERSONAL INTEREST, TALENTS, AND SKILLS, whether in the healthcare professions or not, will make the difference.
